Our History: Born with NASA DNA

We were born out of American innovation in the 1990s when rural western Maryland was bypassed time and again by traditional fiber providers and employers were leaving the region.

Local public officials recruited national consultants and looked for a homegrown solution. The team focused on technology developed for deep space communications and deployed NASA technology called ‘packet radio’ to create wireless data circuits between schools. As the experiment evolved, low power, high spectrum RF transmission reliably beamed high capacity data across great distances.

The Whisper in Maryland

The packet radio project grew into a working wide-area wireless network in rural Allegany County. In 1995 the city, school district, library system, and county government teamed to launch Allconet as the earliest community broadband network in the nation.

Allconet matured to manage voice, data,  video, automatic meter reading,  consumer and business class broadband, and public WiFi. Approaching 30 years old, network based savings to public safety, government and schools have been measured in hundreds of thousands of dollars and never before offered services became possible.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency evaluated the network to be a ‘smart practice’ and national publications featured Allconet. ConxxNE is the technology transfer company to share the multi-user, community-owned network model. Allconet remains our flagship network!

Our portfolio of successful engagements includes projects for cities, counties, state and federal projects, and for corporate, medical, educational and utility networks.
